    Self-healing through the power of the mind/body connection—that is what guided imagery can accomplish.  From the world-renowned Mayo Clinic to local hospitals, clinics and perhaps even your local M.D., guided imagery is gaining popularity and a proven record of success.  Whether you are experiencing flashbacks from a traumatic life event, struggling with cancer treatments, chronic pain, depression, anxiety, making life-changing decisions, experiencing insomnia or just need to learn how to relax, guided imagery can help.

          Did you know that your body “listens” to your every thought, your every mood . . . and when you respond to the world around you with heightened anxiety, constant negativity and sustained hyperarousal, the body has no other choice but to respond to your mind’s command to defend.   Your body is the obedient servant to your mind, and it does not make choices. . . .it can only react to what the mind tells it to do.  So, if your days normally begin with the mind in a state of anxiety and stress and ends with even more anxiety and stress, the result is your body has been working 24 hours, 7 days a week, with no breaks, no rest and no rewards.  Let me stress again . . . the body’s main purpose is to respond to the mind’s ever diligent alert system.  So when the mind is relaxed, at peace and clam, so too is the body.  The mind can signal a release of restorative hormones, enzymes and chemicals – allowing the body to experience rest and relaxation -- or it can signal a release of stress-related hormones, enzymes and chemicals – preventing the body its reward of blissful rest and relaxation.

          Emotional and physical ailments arise when the body – in its effort to respond to your mind’s every wish – isn’t given time to rejuvenate itself by relaxing, calming down and feeling at peace and contented.  If the mind cannot relax, the body then cannot relax, and it becomes tired and weakened and is unable to perform its protective duties.  Just like man’s best friend -- the dog -- your body only wants to please its master -- the mind -- so it responds to its every command, every signal….never questioning, never trying to decide if this is the best course of action to take. 

          One of the most powerful systems in the body is its immune system.  This complex system is your powerhouse of defenses against emotional and physical ailments.  It is the ultimate fighter, the ultimate healer and when it is strong and working properly, it has a much better chance to defend you against all emotional and physical problems that invade your life.  Unfortunately, all too often when the body is unable to recharge itself through rest and relaxation, the immune system is also not given a chance to recharge, and it begins to weaken.  This is where guided imagery can be most effective. 

          Guided Imagery is a type of meditation that teaches your mind to relax, to find solutions to problems, to relieve worry and stress and the body is given the needed time to recharge itself.  Once the body is allowed to recharge, the fighter T and B cells in your immune system strengthen and they are ready to do what they do best . . . keep you emotionally and physically healthy.  Guided Imagery teaches each client how to let the mind experience the world in a new, less threatening way and gives permission to the mind to relax, thereby allowing the body to relax and rebuild its incredible defense systems.  From this completely soothing and relaxing beginning, emotional and physical health can be restored. 

          While I have given a very simplistic view of how the mind-body connection works, I hope you have gained a better understanding of how important it is to your well-being and quality of life to allow your mind. . . .and your body. . . .the luxury of learning how to rest and relax.  I would encourage you to research more about guided imagery and learn about its incredible healing abilities.
